Ongoing Programs for a Strong Defense
Northrop Grumman and Japan have a strong defense partnership that began in the 1950s with the Japan Self-Defense Force operating Grumman Avenger, Albatross, and Tracker aircraft. Today, we continue to support all branches of the JSDF with advanced defense and security systems.
We provide critical components for Japan’s F-35A and F-35B fighter jets, including radar, communication, navigation, and center fuselage systems. Our collaboration with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force includes supplying Longbow Radar and APR-39 radar warning receivers for the AH-64D helicopter. The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force relies on our Airborne Laser Mine Detection System (ALMDS) and AQS-24A mine hunting sonar on the MCH-101 helicopter to safeguard key waterways.
The Japan Air Self-Defense Force uses a range of Northrop Grumman avionics, from radar to electronic warfare and navigation, on aircraft such as the F-4, F-15, F-35, E-767 AWACS, and C-130. Our partnership combines innovation and trust, helping Japan maintain strong national defense capabilities and advancing shared security goals for a safer future.
E-2D Advanced Hawkeye
Selected in 2014, the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye meets Japan's airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) needs. Its advanced sensors and network connectivity enable precise, timely decision-making.
RQ-4B Global Hawk
In 2014, Japan chose the RQ-4B Global Hawk to enhance its ISR capabilities. This unmanned aircraft system gathers diverse intelligence data, flying over 30 hours at altitudes up to 60,000 feet.
Glide Phase Interceptor
Under the Glide Phase Interceptor (GPI) Cooperative Development program, the U.S. Missile Defense Agency and Northrop Grumman will collaborate with the Japanese Ministry of Defense and its industry partners to develop elements of the interceptor. The Japanese-provided systems will be integrated into the GPI All-Up-Round.
